The Seacoast Region of New Hampshire
and Southern Maine
The Seacoast region of New Hampshire and Southern Maine symbolizes the harmony of rural community life and the subtle metropolitan bustle of the new millennium. This balance is evident as you walk along the postcard-like coastline or down the narrow neighborhood streets lined with stately colonial mansions. You can witness the pride people take in their community every day: the many business people strolling to appointments or opening their stores and restaurants; children biking off to school; and fishing boats chugging out of port in pursuit of the Atlantic's bounty.
Seacoast residents tend to their daily lives in the comfort and ease of a safe, family-oriented region. In fact, Maine and New Hampshire are consistently named among the safest states in the country. Our quiet towns exude a neighborly comfort and encompass a wide variety of community programs and activities. Seacoast students attend some of the best public and private schools in the country. And the area's healthcare facilities are known throughout New England for providing superior services to residents. We think that you'll agree that the Greater Portsmouth area offers the best of all worlds. City and rural lifestyles coexist among the changing seasons of New England-the fiery colors of the autumn foliage, the soft pastels of spring flowers, the lush, green grass and sandy beaches of summertime and the blanket of white snow glistening in the winter sun. And the sea's moderating influence on the climate prevents the seasonal temperatures from becoming too extreme.
Settled in 1623, Portsmouth is a year-round hub of activity featuring more than 100 restaurants (nearly 50 in the downtown area alone) that represent the diverse foods and cultures of the world. Annual festivals enliven the city throughout the year, and live entertainment is on stage nightly at indoor and outdoor venues.
A wide range of cultural activities await visitors and residents of the Seacoast. Whether you enjoy going to the theater, listening to jazz or symphony, biking along the coast, taking a harbor cruise or horse-and-buggy ride, shopping for antiques,
visiting our museums and galleries or just sitting on the beach and watching the tide come and go-here you can do it all and more.
Portsmouth's location could not be more ideal. The University of New Hampshire, with its wealth of resources, is a mere 20-minute drive. And Boston, Massachusetts and Portland, Maine are about 50 miles from our Port City. To the northwest are New Hampshire's Lake and White Mountain regions, which provide some of the country's best skiing, hiking, fishing and other outdoor activities.
The Seacoast's transportation network, including the straight-line connection of Portsmouth with Boston and Portland along Interstate 95, makes for convenient travel. Major airports in Boston, Manchester and Portland, augmented by a regular bus service, also provide easy access to the region.
Business thrives on the Seacoast as well. Coupled with New Hampshire's favorable tax structure, the region's pro-business attitude and quality of life attract billion-dollar corporations and small businesses alike. The Seacoast's quality of life and our highly skilled workforce are key selling points that bring companies to the Greater Portsmouth area.
The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, located on Seavey Island, is one of the Seacoast region's largest employers. The Shipyard remains one of just three public facilities on the East Coast that overhauls nuclear submarines. After learning more about our community, we hope that tomorrow, you, too, will choose the Seacoast as the place to raise a family, grow a business and put down roots.
