Greater Portsmouth Area
Over the past decade, the Seacoast area has become a regional leader in healthcare services. With several full-service hospitals, specialty clinics and psychiatric and retirement care facilities, the Seacoast is home to some of the finest and most advanced health institutions in New England.
Healthiness is something of which we can boast. New Hampshire was rated the second healthiest state in the nation, according to an annual survey conducted by Northwestern Life Insurance Co. of Minneapolis. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services ranks the Granite State as having the lowest infant mortality rate and the highest rate of infant immunization in the country. Consumer advocate Ralph Nader has said that New Hampshire has the best mental health system, and Families USA, another advocacy group, determined that New Hampshire has the slowest rate of increase in health costs in the nation.
Portsmouth Regional Hospital and Pavilion has developed a solid reputation for providing high quality, state-of-the-art healthcare services for Seacoast residents. The hospital has more than 200 physicians in a wide range of specialties who serve on the medical staff. It has become a regional center of excellence in cardiac care (home of the Chest Pain Center), neurosurgery and obstetrics. The hospital is an international training center for orthopedic surgery, one of five such programs in the country. The emergency department provides both trauma services for major accidents and illnesses and immediate care services for those with relatively minor ailments.
In Southern Maine, York Hospital has maintained a superb reputation for excellent quality health care since 1904. The 79-bed facility boasts a new surgical center for both ambulatory and major procedures and an acclaimed innovative birthing program. The hospital's Heart Institute provides specialized care to coronary patients, including the availability of cardiac catheterization. Full-service hospitals in nearby Exeter, Dover and Rochester also provide a wide range of programs and services.
