The Government Affairs Committee's Role
During the course of a legislative session (which typically runs from January to June each year), the GAC monitors and tracks many bills of interest. Although over a 1,000 bills are introduced each legislative session, the Chamber identifies roughly 20 bills of concern or interest to the region's business community.
First, the GAC analyzes each bill and determines the extent to which the Chamber will support or oppose each identified legislative initiative. By majority vote, Committee members next collectively determine the best avenue to articulate the Chamber's level of support or opposition to a proposed piece of legislation. Assignments are then made to members to contact legislators, write letters, or testify at hearings, according to the outcome of group discussion with the best information available at the time.
