On Tap Portsmouth Local Brewery TourAt the turn of the century, Portsmouth was known as the ale-making capital of the country. Although Prohibition dampened the industry in 1919, and many other brewing giants have and gone, Portsmouth has carried on the tradition of finely crafted beers and ales and is fast regaining its stature as one of the country's most popular brew hubs. Visitors to Portsmouth can tour several area breweries, some of which have become well known for their lively social atmosphere, and of course, their products. The Portsmouth Brewery is a brew pub located near the city's center. The Brewery is located inside the pub, which also sports a gift shop filled with monikered clothing and brewing memorabilia. www.portsmouthbrewery.com Smuttynose Brewing Company, located on 225 Heritage Way, is best known for its ale. The company's brewers are happy to show visitors around and provide a sample of their craft. www.smuttynose.com Redhook Brewery produces more than 50,000 barrels of craft brew a year in the tradition of the Reinheitsebot-a German purity law that forbids the use of chemicals, preservatives and inexpensive fermentables like corn and rice. They too, invite visitors for tours which include samples and a beer glass memento. Redhook is located at the entrance of the Pease International Tradeport, just off Route 16.
