Lecture Barbara Ward Life on the Home front during the War of 1812

July 19

As part of our bicentennial commemoration of the War of 1812, the Portsmouth Historical Society is sponsoring a lecture at the Discover Portsmouth Center at 5:30 PM by Barbara Ward, Director/Curator of the Moffatt-Ladd House and Garden titled "Life on the Home front during the War of 1812." Dr. Ward will contrast the experiences of several prominent families in Portsmouth in order to explain their differing views on the war. The Whipple, Langdon and Elwyn families were generally in favor of the war while the Havens and Ladds were opposed. With much of New England opposed to the war, why did several of Portsmouth’s most successful families support James Madison’s policies? Did either side benefit from the war?

At the John Paul Jones House you can visit the exhibit about the war and its impact on Portsmouth entitled “War of 1812: What it Meant to Portsmouth.” The exhibit examines events during the war and how they influenced lives and fortunes in Portsmouth. It runs through October 31 at the John Paul Jones House, 43 Middle St Portsmouth. For more information please call 603 436-8420 or email info@portsmouthhistory.org.
