Portsmouth and The Arts

Even before the Revolution, Portsmouth was a small but sophisticated social capital focused on a busy seaport with world-wide trade. In the 19th century, poets like Celia Thaxter and Thomas Bailey Aldrich kept the flame of Portsmouth arts alive. The renaissance of the downtown and the river three decades ago tapped a flood of talent. People who love and practice the arts have since transformed the city into a cultural mecca.

The historic Portsmouth Music Hall, which celebrated its 125th year in 2003, and the Prescott Park Arts Festival draw international stars and local talent. Musicians, painters, photographers, craftspeople, poets, writers, dancers, actors and talented people of every discipline keep the region vibrant. Visitors will find an array of galleries and performance venues as well as events to fill every waking hour - all inspired by the sea and nourished by a community that values the arts.
